Explore the science and investigation of fire.

Students examine realistic fire scenes to determine the cause, origin and development of a fire while applying key scientific principles.

Topics include:

  • Scene preservation and safety

  • The chemistry of fire and the fire tetrahedron

  • Combustion phases

  • Pyrolysis, flashover and backdraught

  • Burn pattern interpretation and point of origin analysis

road traffic collision investigation

Investigate a simulated road traffic collision to determine what happened and why. 

Students consider:

  • Human, environmental and vehicle factors

  • Motion, friction and reaction times

  • Relevant legislation including drink and drug driving, speed and road safety

Practical elements include:

  • Scene documentation

  • Vehicle examination

  • Witness interviewing
